ubuntu Phone、ubuntu タブレット、Firefox OSなど、Andoridを踏み台にして、その上に自分たちの環境を構築する方法が、スマートフォン、タブレット、TV、STBなどで一般化しつつあります。

ハード屋さん的な発想だと、現在のARMを使ったSoCのターゲットがほとんどがAndroid製品を作ることを目的としているので、チップメーカーからのBSP（あるいはSDK）が、Xが動く標準的なLinuxをサポートしていないということに原因があるような気がします。
要するに、作れば売れるAndroid市場にしか興味がなく、そこで売れるためのドライバーなどのソフトサポートしかしない方向。特に中華SoCはその傾向！

一方、ソフト屋さん的には、Xサーバーも古くなりWeylandを使用する方向に行くのでしょうか？

しかし、ubuntuはXもWaylandも使用しない第三の選択をするようです。

• Mirは、Canonicalで開発され、X.OrgまたはWaylandに基づいていない新しいディスプレイサーバ
• Androidのグラフィックスドライバがサポート
• 既存のDRM / KMS /Mesa/GBM（オープンソースのLinuxグラフィックスドライバ）が動作する。Canonicalは、そのドライバの互換性を確保するためにバイナリブロブベンダーに働きかけている
• 統合されたroot-less X.Org Serverを介して古いX11のアプリケーションはサポートされる
• CanonicalはMirでネーティブアプリはGTK3とQt/QMLツールキットでサポート
• Mirは、Ubuntu PhoneからUbuntu Linuxのデスクトップのすべてのフォームファクタに使用される
• Mirは今年の10月までにubuntu Phone OSで用意され、1年以内に他のフォームファクタ（デスクトップ）に用意されるだろう

Mir開発の3つのマイルストーン

• 2013年5月：Mirと次のUnityを統合することに向けた最初のステップを完了
• 2013年10月：UnityとMirはUbuntu Phoneをサポート。デスクトップとラップトップには、レガシーモードでアクセス
• 2014年4月：完全にMirディスプレイサーバーに移行

Ubuntu 14.04 LTSは完全に新しいディスプレイサーバを使用する最初のリリースになる
